INTRODUCTION
Garrowby Estate is located 13 miles east of York and comprises a significant property portfolio made up of the following:
Three principal houses
40 let farms
140 let houses and cottages
800 acre in-hand farm
Stud farm
1140 acres of forestry
Various commercial properties including a village pub
Garrowby Estate and three other estates owned by the Halifax family are managed from the Estate Office in Bugthorpe. There are 40 employees including an in-house Works Department with a current staff of 8 joiners and builders.
THE POSITION
The Estate is looking for a highly motivated and organised individual, ideally with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience, to join the team in the role of Buildings Manager. The successful candidate will assist the Head of Buildings with all reactive repairs, planned maintenance and improvement projects across the Estate’s diverse property portfolio.
The position will include the following tasks:
• Assisting the Head of Buildings in the running of the Works Department, including overseeing work undertaken by the in-house trades and assisting in the development of the employees.
• Assisting in the purchasing of materials and approving invoices.
• Overseeing repairs and improvement projects on the Estate including work undertaken by contractors.
• Delivery of projects within agreed timescales and on budget.
• Assisting with the preparation of schedules of work, pricing, tender documents and obtaining quotations.
• Delivering the Health & Safety and CDM compliance across the Buildings Department.
• Assisting in the preparation of annual budgets including monitoring during the year.
• Drawing up property Records of Condition and Dilapidations schedules.
• Liaising with stakeholders, local authorities and interested parties and obtaining any necessary external consents for specific projects.
• Updating the Estate’s owners and Management Team on the progress of projects.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
• People management and team leading skills are essential.
• A good understanding of buildings regulations and legislation.
• Experience of dealing with a range of building types, from modern agricultural buildings to historic buildings.
• Experience of delivering projects on time and on budget.
• Able to work as an individual and as part of a small team, with the ability to motivate colleagues and encourage a positive work ethic.
• Good communication and organisational skills.
• Honesty, enthusiasm and capacity for hard work.
• Good knowledge of Health and Safety and CDM regulations.
• Good IT skills especially Excel, Word and Outlook. CAD would be an advantage.
• Full UK Driving licence.
QUALIFICATIONS
One of the following qualifications or similar would be desirable:
• HND/HNC in Architectural Technology
• HND/HNC in Construction Management
Training can be provided where required or appropriate.
REMUNERATION, WORKING HOURS & HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT
Salary dependent on experience and qualifications. Accommodation can be provided as part of the remuneration package in addition to a pool car, or a car allowance.
The successful applicant will be entitled to join the Estate’s pension scheme, and the employer will contribute 6% of salary.
Working hours are 8am to 5.15pm Monday to Friday with 1 hour for lunch. Some flexibility will be required at times to respond to emergency call outs.
Holiday entitlement commences with 30 working days including public holidays, rising an extra day for every full year of service, up to a maximum of 33 days including public holidays.
The successful applicant will be expected to commence work as soon as possible.
