The following is a brief update of what is happening on the Halifax Estates, which may be of interest.
David Lord completed this epic ride on Sunday 20 June. He covered 1006 miles in 9 days and has raised over £8500 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
On Thursday 1 July Garrowby Estate hosted 229 children and their teachers from schools throughout Hull and the East Riding for the biannual CFE visit.
The CFE is a national charity which arranges Estate days to promote a better understanding for primary school children of the workings of the countryside and Garrowby has been involved for many years.
We were blessed with excellent weather and the children enjoyed their time with the Forestry Department learning about planting trees, harvesting timber and the various markets available. They also had a chance to guess how long a tree surgeon would take to scale a tree! Other sessions were held at Garrowby Stud taking them through from the foaling of the horses to training for the racecourse and in the Game Department where there were individual sessions on rearing of game birds, hounds, gundog training and deer control.
On 12 June the Agent, David Lord, will be taking part in Ride Across Britain 2010 which involves cycling from John O'Groats to Land's End in 9 days. Although the official charity of the event is ParalympicsGB, David will be fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support and has set himself a target of £3000. He would be very grateful for any assistance to reach this target.

In a positive step to reduce carbon emissions on Garrowby Estate, air source heating systems are currently being installed in two bungalows in Bugthorpe. The systems work by extracting low-grade heat from the outside air and using it to provide heating and domestic hot water.
Anyone using the A64 southern bypass around York can't have failed to notice the new campus that is being constructed on Halifax Estates' land at Heslington.
Phase 1 of this £500m development comprises 614 student rooms, three new academic departments and the Hub and Catalyst Buildings, which will contain 'knowledge exchange' accommodation for science and technology based businesses. This first phase is due to be completed by September 2010.
